windows 10 end of support

Windows 10 at the end of the road: what are the alternatives?

Reading Time: 2 minutes

On October 14, 2025, Microsoft will officially end support for Windows 10, version 22H2 (Home, Pro, Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise). This is the last major version of the operating system. Once the support period expires, devices still running Windows 10 will no longer receive security updates.

If you are still using Windows 10, it’s time to make a decision: either extend support through the Microsoft program, or switch to Windows 11 or even an alternative.

What does the end of support for Windows 10 mean?

After October 14, 2025, Microsoft will no longer provide monthly security updates for Windows 10. This means that PCs remaining on this operating system will gradually become vulnerable to cyber attacks, malware, and other threats.

The last official update will be included in the security package released in October 2025. After that, users will have to opt for other solutions if they want to keep their devices protected.

Options to continue using Windows 10

Microsoft offers several methods to extend the support period through the Extended Security Update (ESU) program. Options include:

  1. Activating Windows Backup (free) – synchronizes settings in the cloud, using OneDrive. You need a Microsoft account and get 5 GB of free space.
  2. Redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points (free) – you can accumulate points by using Bing, Microsoft Store, Edge, or Xbox.
  3. Paying a fee of approximately $30 for one year of extended support – available in several countries, with prices that may vary.

There are also unofficial solutions, such as using special versions of Windows 10 LTSC, which can receive updates until 2032. However, these come with certain risks and are not recommended for ordinary users.

Switching to Windows 11 – Microsoft’s recommended solution

Microsoft encourages users to upgrade to Windows 11, either by updating their existing PC or by purchasing a new device. However, not all computers are compatible with Windows 11 requirements, which can be an obstacle.

Windows 11 brings important visual and functional changes, but also offers the possibility to customize it to resemble Windows 10 more closely.

Alternatives: Linux or Chromebook

For those who don’t want to switch to Windows 11, there are other options:

  • Linux – distributions like Linux Mint, Zorin OS, KDE Plasma, or Wubuntu are designed for users coming from the Windows ecosystem. These are free and can turn old computers into fast and secure devices.
  • Chromebook – a simple and practical choice for those who use their PC for internet browsing, online applications, and basic tasks.

Crisis or opportunity?

The end of support for Windows 10 should not be seen as a crisis, but as an opportunity to modernize your system. Whether you choose to temporarily extend support, upgrade to Windows 11, or switch to Linux or Chromebook, it’s important not to remain stuck on an outdated and vulnerable version.
