WhatsApp Premium

WhatsApp could introduce a Premium subscription

Reading Time: 2 minutes

WhatsApp, one of the most widely used messaging services in the world, is preparing to take a significant step towards a subscription monetization model. After years of the app being essentially free, Meta is now testing premium options that offer new and exclusive features, without restricting access to basic functions such as messaging or calls.

What is the Premium subscription (or WhatsApp Plus)

According to information published in tech publications and reports from beta versions of the app, WhatsApp could introduce aoptional paid version, unofficially named “WhatsApp Plus” or the Premium Plus subscription.

Essentially, this would be a type of additional subscription beyond the normal, free WhatsApp for all users, aimed at those who wantadvanced customization and productivity features in the app.

Expected features in the WhatsApp Premium subscription:

  1. Increase in the limit of “pinned” conversations
The current system allows pinning only 3 conversations at the top of the list. In the paid version, this number could expand to20 pinned conversations, providing quick access to important discussions.
  2. Themes and visual customization
Users could choose from multiple color and interface themes, which is not available for non-paying users.
  3. Custom app icons
The ability to change the WhatsApp icon on the home screen for a more personalized look.
  4. Exclusive sticker and reaction packs
Subscribers could receiveexclusive stickers, as well as more complex reactions to messages, something not available in the standard version.
  5. Exclusive sounds and tones
Not just visual stickers, but also unique ringtones and notification sounds could be included in the paid package.

What will not change in WhatsApp

An important point highlighted by sources is thatbasic features remain free for all users. Sending messages, audio/video calls, group chats, and security features will not be placed behind a paywall.

This is meant to maintain broad access to the basic functionality that billions of people use daily, while the premium subscription offers only optional features for those interested.

Why is WhatsApp introducing the Premium subscription

The move towards a subscription model reflects a wider monetization strategy for Meta products (the parent company of WhatsApp). Other popular apps like Instagram or Facebook will also receive similar premium plans, tested in parallel.

The decision comes at a time when many digital platforms are looking to reduce total reliance on advertising revenue and provide customization options and advanced features to users willing to pay for them.

When will the subscription be available?

So far, WhatsApp has not announced an official launch date or the final price of the Premium or Premium Plus subscription. The functionality is currently in testing in beta versions and it is possible that it will be gradually rolled out to different markets before the global launch.

However, there is the option to sign up for a waiting list in certain beta versions, through which users will receive notifications when the new service becomes available.
