how to uninstal a program in Windows 11

How to completely uninstall a program in Windows 11

Reading Time: 5 minutes

Have you installed a program in Windows 11 that you no longer use and want to completely remove? In most cases, uninstallation takes only a few seconds, but simply removing the application from the list of programs does not always mean that all associated files have disappeared.

To uninstall a program in Windows 11, go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find the application, click on the three dots next to it, and select Uninstall. For older programs, you can also use Control Panel > Programs and Features.

If you want to remove any remaining files as well, there are a few additional checks you can do without necessarily installing a special uninstallation program.

How to uninstall a program in Windows 11

The simplest method is the one available directly in the Settings app.

Step 1: Open Settings

Press the Windows + I keys simultaneously.

Alternatively, open the Start menu and select Settings.

Step 2: Go to Installed apps

From the Settings menu, select:

Apps → Installed apps

You will see the list of applications and programs installed on your computer.

Step 3: Find the program in Windows 11

You can scroll through the list or use the search field to find the application you want to remove more quickly.

Click the button with three dots next to the program.

Step 4: Select Uninstall

Select Uninstall and confirm the operation if Windows prompts you to do so.

Depending on the application, it may start its own uninstallation program. Follow the displayed instructions until the end.

Important: do not close the uninstallation process before it is completed. Some programs remove multiple components, services, or drivers during this operation.

How to quickly uninstall a program from the Start menu

There is also a faster method if you already know which application you want to remove.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type the name of the program.
  3. Right-click on the application.
  4. Select Uninstall.
  5. Confirm the uninstallation.

Depending on the type of application, Windows 11 may open Settings or its own uninstallation program.

This method is useful when you want to quickly remove an application without manually searching through the complete list of installed programs.

How to uninstall a program in Windows 11 using Control Panel

If the program does not appear in the Installed apps list, it does not necessarily mean it cannot be uninstalled.

Older desktop applications may use the traditional Programs and Features system.

The quickest way to open it is:

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Identify the program in the list.
  5. Select it.
  6. Press Uninstall.
  7. Follow the on-screen instructions.

This method is particularly useful for classic programs installed via .exe or .msi files.

How to delete remaining files after uninstallation

This is where the difference between uninstalling a program and what many users call a “complete uninstallation” comes into play.

An uninstaller may remove the main application, but some programs may leave behind configuration files, cache, logs, or other data.

Before manually deleting any folder, it is important to check that it indeed belongs to the application you have uninstalled.

Check the Program Files folder

You can check C:Program Files and C:Program Files (x86). Look for a folder that bears the name of the program or the manufacturer. Do not delete folders you are not sure belong to the uninstalled application.

Check AppData

Some applications keep settings and data in the user profile.

To quickly open the relevant folder, press: Windows + R → %AppData% → Enter

You can also check Windows + R → %LocalAppData% → Enter

Look for folders associated with the application you have removed. These directories may contain settings, cache, or other application data. If you are unsure what a certain folder represents, it is better not to delete it.

Do you need to manually delete all remaining files?

No. It is a common mistake to assume that a computer needs to be “cleaned” manually after each uninstallation.

If the program was uninstalled correctly, small remaining files usually do not pose a problem for Windows 11.

Manual deletion becomes more relevant when:

  • the application was uninstalled but still occupies a lot of space;
  • you want to completely remove the data and configuration of an application;
  • you intend to reinstall the program and want to start from clean settings;
  • the program left behind an obvious and unnecessary folder.

Before deleting data, check if it contains documents or other personal files.

What to do if a program in Windows 11 won’t uninstall?

There are situations where Windows 11 displays an error or the uninstallation does not complete.

Try, in this order:

1. Restart the computer

A process associated with the program may still be active. A restart can free the files used by the application.

2. Close the application

Check if the program is open and close it before trying to uninstall again.

3. Try uninstalling the program from Settings

Navigate to: Settings → Apps → Installed apps → [program] → Uninstall

4. Access Control Panel

Press Windows + R, type appwiz.cpl, and press Enter.

5. Look for the official executable of the manufacturer

Some applications, especially security programs, drivers, and certain utilities, use their own removal tools.

In such cases, it is preferable to use the official uninstaller of the manufacturer.

Can I simply delete the program folder?

It is not recommended. If you manually delete the folder from Program Files, the program may remain registered in Windows or retain services and other components.

Additionally, certain applications install components in multiple locations. Therefore, the correct order is:

uninstall the program → restart Windows if necessary → check for any remaining files.

Not the other way around.

Do I need a special program for uninstallation?

For most users, no. Windows 11 already includes the necessary tools for uninstalling common applications.

A third-party uninstallation utility can be useful in certain situations, for example when an application cannot be removed normally or when you want to identify remaining files.

However, installing an additional program just to uninstall a simple application is not mandatory.

If you choose such a tool, download it from an official source and carefully check what elements it proposes to remove.

How to uninstall a program that doesn’t appear in “installed applications” in Windows 11?

If the application is missing from Settings → Apps → Installed apps, try:

Windows + R → appwiz.cpl → Enter

If it does not appear there either, look in the application’s installation folder for a file like Uninstall.exe or check the official documentation of the manufacturer.

For applications installed through the Microsoft Store, the uninstallation method may differ from that used by traditional desktop programs.

What happens to files created by the program?

Uninstalling an application should not be confused with deleting documents created with that application.

For example, if you used a program to create documents, photos, projects, or other personal files, these may remain on the computer.

Always make a backup of important files before manually deleting application folders.

Some programs store user data in locations such as Documents, AppData, or other custom directories.

How to check if the program has been removed

After uninstallation, you can perform a few simple checks:

  • search for the program in the Start menu;
  • check Settings → Apps → Installed apps;
  • check Control Panel → Programs and Features;
  • search for the application’s folder in Program Files;
  • check %AppData% and %LocalAppData% if you want to remove any remaining settings.

If the application is no longer installed and there is no data you wish to keep, the process is complete.

When is it worth doing a deeper clean?

If you are uninstalling a program just because you no longer use it, there is no need to turn the operation into an aggressive “cleaning” of the system.

Instead, if you have removed a problematic application, if you want to reinstall the program with completely new settings, or if you are left with a bulky folder that takes up unnecessary space, it is worth checking the remaining data manually.

This process does not necessarily mean that you will have a faster system. It is more important to know what you are deleting than to remove as many files as possible.

And if there is one thing to remember: a program should not be “hunted” through all Windows folders to be considered uninstalled. Always start with the official uninstallation method and only try to manually uninstall an application when you have a concrete reason.
