Cloud Rebuild – the new recovery feature for Windows 11

Microsoft is testing a new recovery feature for Windows 11, called Cloud Rebuild, which promises to significantly simplify the operating system reinstallation process when the PC no longer starts. The new functionality is currently available in Windows 11 Insider Experimental Preview Build 26300.8772 and represents an important step in Microsoft’s strategy to increase the operating system’s resilience.

In the current Insider version, users can initialize Cloud Rebuild directly from the Windows Recovery Environment by following these steps:

2. Selecting Troubleshoot > Recovery and uninstall > Cloud Rebuild.
3. Connecting the computer to the Internet via Ethernet or Wi-Fi.
4. Verifying the Windows version, edition, and language to be installed.
5. Confirming the data deletion warning and initiating the reinstallation.

The process downloads all necessary files directly from Microsoft servers and reinstalls the system along with compatible drivers.

What is the difference between Cloud Rebuild and Reset this PC?

Windows 11 already offers the Reset this PC feature, including the option to download from the cloud. However, there are important differences.

Reset this PC:

• works primarily when Windows can initialize without problems;
• can keep personal files;
• mostly uses existing drivers on the device.

Cloud Rebuild:

• works even if Windows no longer starts;
• performs a completely clean reinstallation;
• automatically downloads new drivers from Windows Update;
• does not require a USB stick or ISO image;
• does not keep user applications and data.

This difference makes Cloud Rebuild a solution oriented towards recovering severely affected systems.

Is a Microsoft account required for Cloud Rebuild?

According to information published by Microsoft for the test version Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26300.8772, the Cloud Rebuild feature does not require authentication to a Microsoft account to reinstall the operating system. The process is initiated from the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and only needs an Internet connection to download the Windows image and compatible drivers directly from Microsoft servers.

However, after reinstallation is complete, the initial setup of Windows 11 (OOBE) may require logging in with a Microsoft account, depending on the operating system edition and applicable requirements at that time. In other words, the need for a Microsoft account is related to the Windows setup stage after reinstallation, not to the use of the Cloud Rebuild feature itself.
